Model 1840 Calvary Saber German manufactured "Schnitzler and Kirschbaum firm of Solingen, Germany" Imported High Quality Blade…fine, steel, single edge blade, curved with wide flat back One of an Unknown Number Purchased by the U.S. Ordinance Department

Typical Model 1840 artillery type hilt; brass single guard; knucklebow displaying a rich, untouched patina. The double fullered curved blade with 7" false edge is very clean and bright with minuscule nick in the edge. Wood core grip is excellent and is wound with cording which is wrapped with original black leather. The twisted brass wire on the grips is very tight and strong. The heavy scabbard displays a pleasing mottled surface with use-ware; missing mouth-piece. Ricasso marked with emblem of a knight’s helm. These “wrist breakers” saw much duty in America’s war with Mexico, then during the Civil War.
