Scarce “Hyde & Goodrich, New Orleans” Agent Marked Henry

Hyde & Goodrich was a major New Orleans retail firm established in 1819, going out of business in July of 1861 at the beginning of the Civil War. Of the many Hyde & Goodrich marked arms known; these Deringer authorized agent marked pistols are among their most popular and are quite scarce.

First listed in records as arms merchants – the firm of James N. Hyde and Charles W. Goodrich supplied cavalry sabers and pikes to the Confederate States, only ceasing business when the Union occupied New Orleans.

This is a nice example of a large Deringer. “DERINGER/ PHILADEL” is stamped on the barrel flat of breech next to “MANU FOR / HYDE & GOODRICH / AGENTS N. O. on the barrel flat.

Not only is Derringer’s address found on the flat of breech, it is repeated on the engraved lock plate; the hammer, nose cap, and lockplate screw are also engraved. The silver trigger guard, buttplate, and wedge escutcheons are engraved.

The pistol is complete with silver headed ramrod with worm, and fixed sights.

Measurement: .45-caliber; Overall length: 7.25"; barrel length: 2.75”

Material: Walnut stock, coin silver and German silver

Item Condition: Very good, mechanically tight and smooth. The barrel marking is strong except for the top line which reads: Manu _ _ HYDE & GOODRICH / AGENTS, N. O.; MANU [abbreviation for manufactured] is partially legible.
