Firearm curiosa, a combination weapon – A true hunting knife with unique period blade and a fully enclosed .28-caliber pistol within the folding wooden handle [case] that is unlike the very few pieces published in firearms curiosa books, this example is NOT the more common tableware. This is a combination hunting knife with clip point single-edged blade, wide fuller, and quillon within a brass-bound wooden scabbard having grommets for attachment to belt or hunting bag.
The brass-bound hinged knife [pistol case] handle fully encloses a miguelet flintlock pistol that serves as the knifes grip The brass grip [gun frame] is shaped and engraved.
The mechanical parts of the iron flintlock mechanism were mounted on both sides of the grip [miguelet style].
Item Date: 1690 - 1730
Measurement: Overall Length: 11.5"; Blade Length: 6.375"; Barrel Length: 1.5"
Material: Unknown wood scabbard
Item Condition: The overall condition of knife/pistol is outstanding, especially considering age and use. The action is dependable and mechanically smooth. The knife scabbard and its furniture are fine. The combination of knife grip, pistol case and related furniture is fine; there is trivial restoration by an expert to a small section of wood that appears to have developed shrinkage fissures. The conservation does not distract or compromise…in fact, an astute examiner needs to look closely with magnification to find the repair.
