Gunstock War Club with Spear Point Blade, American Indian
Late 19th Century, left facing

War club, incised, red highlighted decoration on handle, file work at grip; two brass tacks at butt; pinned wrought iron triangular blade having rectangular notches at tang. The iron blade displays very good overall condition with scattered staining and light surface pitting; one of two retaining blade attachment pins is missing. The wood body shows good patina, scattered areas of soiling and scuffing as can be seen in photos.
Accompanying this club is a document stating that the artifact was owned by the "National Museum of the American Indian" which is part of the Smithsonian Museum system. The Smithsonian letter cites that item 19/5093 was exchanged in 1963 (collector is named within document; accession numbers on club) and was described as "gun shaped war club with incised decoration on handle and iron point." This club measures 28" overall; blade is 5.5" long; just over 2" wide at base.
