A beautifully made half-stock rifle by a rare maker listed in The New York State Firearms Trade by H.J. Swinney – Compiled by Tom Roe, page 1685. Also listed in the book Der Neue Stockel (translated from Swedish to German) working 1861-1865. He is also listed in Sellers (American Gunsmiths) with the same date range which means he’s listed in city directories for those years.
A standard configuration displaying very fine engraving ornamenting the breech
[inlaid with two silver bands] and tang; the trigger guard with pineapple forend and long tang is inlaid as is the “shooters” crescent shape buttplate toe. The German silver cap box is beautifully engraved as is the stag inlaid on cheekpiece and lockplate screw head and escutcheon, The rear entry pipe is lightly engraved; German silver forend cap is plain. The engraved lockplate and hammer retain 50% blue. There are two steel ramrod pipes. The .42-caliber rifled octagonal barrel retains approximately 85+% brown; rifling is sharp and clean. Sight combo is a Lyman-influenced target upgrade set (front: hooded globe; rear: adjustable tang peep with threaded elevation post; naturally aged patinated surface.
In closing, this rifle is a much better condition gun than usually found.
