Massachusetts Militia Musket
Proofed and dated 1828
Marketed by Payson & Nurse
Inspected by "LH" - SOLD

The barrel and lock are nicely marked; barrel is unusual whereas it is not pin fastened, but fastened with wedges and escutcheons. The front 12-inches of the fore-stock wood is a very well done replacement. The hammer-top jaw guide is unusually tall and the special order butt plate is also unusual...occurring only on some Massachusetts military long arms. All brass furniture with rack number; "No. 7" on the sideplate. It appears that the musket has survived as originally assembled with the exception of the wood repair.
See George Moller's book, Massachusetts Military Muskets. These are often thought to have been made as Sea Fencible issue guns, which may not be so, but they were most likely for naval use. There is an entire chapter on these guns in Moller's book.
