Kentucky Rifle
George Kopp (1810-1890)

Fully stocked in bold curly maple with raised cheek-piece; decorated with 24-engraved German silver inlays including a pierced hand-piece and a wonderful shaped and engraved comb overlay; cheek with oval eagle engraved piece. Brass trigger guard, four piece engraved and pierced patch-box, brass butt-plate with long engraved tang, fancy engraved side-plate and rammer ferrules. The .38-caliber octagonal barrel with 8-groove rifling is a plumb-brown color; front blade sight is German silver; rear sight centers feathery engraving on barrel flat behind which is stamped in blocked letters G. KOPP. The barrel is held by pin and a two screw tang; surrounding the barrel on top of wrist is a wonderful repair...a conforming steel plate held by multiple screws securing a wrist crack. The plate is a plumb-brown color and was most likely installed during the rifles early period of use. The "G. Goulcher" (George Goulcher, NYS lock maker) lock plate with border incised engraving is embellished with engraved pheasants; fancy engraved sideplate. The brass trigger guard has an early professional brass repair as depicted. This rifle with double set trigger was used...some wood loss behind breech; the action sometimes sticks. Overall Length: 52 inches; barrel length: 36.5 inches.
