A Military Blunderbuss
Plain Iron Barrel
Lock Signed "WILSON"
Early 19th Century

This example is approximately 32.5-inches in total length; barrel approximately 17.5-inches long. Iron barrel has 19th century London gun maker's proofs (Crown over "G" and Crown over "V") with "IG" between. The banana lock is marked "WILSON" and has a crown over "I". The iron ramrod may be original. The stock has checkered wrist, carved cheek piece and a small beavertail on rear of lock plateau…great color and patina. The stock has usual dents and scuffing as well as crack running from just below lock along underside to brass tail pipe long ago filled with a resin…now hardened and dark with its own fissure. The crack is tight and was long-ago pinned during its period of use. This piece was used for many years. Brass butt-plate and trigger guard with long tang and nice finials as depicted; single iron sling swivel remains on butt; forend swivel securing-pin-holes were filled many-many decades ago. Barrel is speckled brown; good color on all metal parts…some minor shallow surface roughness on rear end of lock plate behind cock. Mechanically fine. (There were at least four Wilson gunsmiths in London and it appears that they all, at one time or another, made weapons for the East India Company and the Hudson's Bay Company.)
