Japanned Tin “Drum” Canteen
Mid-nineteenth century...
This 4.5-inch by 1 7/8-inch tin canteen retains most of its chestnut brown japanning. There is a 4.5-inch by ½-inch wide belt loop on the reverse. In the early 19th century, every man over 17 was required to join the local militia and often had to provide his own weapon and accoutrements. A simple drum-shaped canteen such as this one could serve the dual purpose of being used for militia duty and for hunting. The canteen has the expected wear to the original japanning, but is in otherwise excellent condition with no rust, splits, or dents.
