Pecare and Smith, 10 Shot Pepperbox, Full Barrel Shield
New York, NY
1848 to 1853

A 10-shot pepperbox with rare iron frame which is marked by maker; 3.5" barrel cluster having full steel shroud; concealed hammer and folding trigger, serial number 252, .28 caliber with sight on the hammer. The pistol features a round iron frame and two piece walnut bag shaped grips; barrel and frame ornamented with engraved foliate pattern. There is a capping hole at the bottom of the barrel shield. The barrel screw is engraved. ³AH² is probably an inspectorıs mark. The condition is excellent; no original finish; metal is smooth gray with some light pitting. The grips are in great color and retain most of their original varnish; tight action. Pecare & Smith was the only manufacturer of this barrel shield system, one of the most sought after American made pepperboxes. The shield was designed to stop an adversary from grasping the barrels to prevent the gun from being fired.
Dimensions: Length: 7.5" overall.
