Condition: Excellent, varnish is darkly oxidized, tiny chip to center spire that does not
distract.
Additional Information: Elaborately carved, whimsy [or whimsey] likely a gift from a groom to
his bride. Three tier graduated stepped base, steps with canted edges and brick foundation
raised on cutout feet. Within the tiered steps is carved a concave stairway leading to door above
which are four chip carved frontal sections; the sides display two sections. The arched window
openings contain a large olive green painted ball; finials are gold. Underside of base scratch
carved “H. Collins”. A gem!
Condition: Very good, original dry surface, any minor imperfections minor
Additional Information: Competently joined unit featuring pierced and applied stars,
elaborate pierced scrolling; two slightly bowed graduated shelves above lower case
containing long drawer having overhanging ends.
Marquetry body, with carved neck, and 14 total frets
Sound hole is Crescent Moon with 10 cut-out stars on top,
Reminds us of a South Carolina motif, but no firm history
Carved one-piece bridge and saddle is included, but not installed.
Depending on where the saddle is installed, scale can be 14-18"
10.5" from nut to 14th fret. Some toning to varnish, but no discernable play wear.
Not strung, so not evaluated as a playing instrument, but instead as a great piece of
folk art. Great folk art musical instrument to be hung on the wall or added
to a great folk art or musical instrument collection. (L 28.5", W 11.75” D: 2")
Three-layer graduated chip carved geometric segments; horizontal center section of all
panels upholstered in green brushed cotton velvet against which are the laminated and
stained segments. The center panel of lid displays “Ch.S over 1902 against green
velvet…flanked by pilsner type beer glasses.
(Height: 4.25"; width: 9.25"; depth: 5.25", one 3” by 3/8” piece is missing from base of
back; loss doesn’t distract; we are able to have it replaced.)
