A beautifully rendered still life by noted Belgian painter Jean-Baptiste Robie, presenting an abundant arrangement of flowers and fruit against a deep, atmospheric background. Large pink and cream roses form the center of the composition, surrounded by smaller blossoms and foliage; ripe strawberries spill from a shallow basket at right, balanced by plums arranged upon the tabletop at left and foreground.

Robie’s accomplished handling of light and texture is particularly evident in the luminous flower petals, richly colored fruit, and carefully observed foliage, all emerging dramatically from the dark ground. Signed “J. Robie” lower left. The painting survives in a handsome period gilt frame [likely original] bearing a Robie name plaque.

One thing we especially like about this picture is the strawberries. Robie could easily have made the composition simply pretty; instead, that intensely red mass gives the painting real visual weight and balances the wonderfully extravagant roses.

There is a paper label on reverse: From the O. Ames Estate.
