Fowler, Flintlock, Hudson River Valley, Curly Maple Stock, Classic Carving
New York, Circa 1760, Lock Signed Chance
.78 caliber, 53" hook breech barrel, rear sighting flat on barrel, Tower proofs - SOLD

Fowler, Flintlock, Hudson River Valley, Curly Maple Stock, Classic Carving
New York, Circa 1760, right facing

This original and classic English style HRV flintlock fowler is closely-related to the "Richard Varick" Fowler in Tom Grinslade's "Flintlock Fowlers the First Guns Made in America 1700-1820", BS6-BS7, pp. 178 and 179. This gun features classic Hudson Valley school carving; relief carved around the breech tang, the lock and sideplate, rear trigger guard, and rear ramrod pipe. The choice curly maple stock with fine fore-stock molding has developed a rich warm color and has all brass mountings; retains original ramrod with cleaning jag, and horn nose-cap. The barrel surface is smooth with an old dark honey brown oil finish. Wood is nicely striped, has a pleasing surface and features a large swell at rear ramrod pipe. Classic relief carving centers the barrel breech tang, the leading edge of comb and the length of barrel channel. The piece remains in very good condition. Approximately 19.5? from the front of barrel, there is an old break in the wood which has been re-glued and is not offensive. Forearm has 1/4? sliver replaced on right side, approximately 9? long, while the left side has a 1/4? by 4-3/4? replaced sliver (tapered). In area of the rear ramrod pipe, the carving is heavily worn and ramrod is exposed for 3? in the forearm. Brass mountings are of appropriate high quality design and display nice color. (Overall L: 69.25", barrel L: 53")
