Exceptional Eugène Lefaucheux six-shot 12mm pinfire revolver, factory serial no. LF 72399, manufactured in Paris and retailed by Ferdinand Claudin. The revolver bears the distinctive Lefaucheux broken-pistol trademark above the “LF” factory designation and serial number, firmly identifying Lefaucheux manufacture.
Ferdinand Claudin was an established Parisian gunmaker and firearms dealer who operated at 38 Boulevard des Italiens during this period. Documented Lefaucheux revolvers bearing Claudin’s Paris inscription establish the relationship between Lefaucheux manufacture and Claudin retailing.
The revolver is particularly distinguished by its lavish finish. Extensive foliate engraving covers the barrel, frame, cylinder and other components, complemented by full gold plating and finely finished fruitwood grips. A lanyard ring is mounted at the butt, and the revolver retains the characteristic under-barrel ejector arrangement of the Lefaucheux pinfire system.
Eugène Lefaucheux was one of the most important figures in the development of practical metallic-cartridge firearms during the mid-19th century. Building upon the pinfire cartridge system pioneered by his father, Casimir Lefaucheux, Eugène developed successful repeating handguns that achieved widespread military and civilian use throughout Europe and beyond.
The combination of documented Lefaucheux factory markings, Claudin association, extensive engraving, full gold-plated finish and unusually fine condition identifies this as a particularly deluxe example of the classic French 12mm pinfire revolver.
