Fine J. Stevens & Co. New Model Pocket Rifle, serial no. 4868, chambered in .32 caliber and fitted with a 12 in. barrel. This example exhibits characteristics transitional between the First and Second Issue New Model Pocket Rifles and dates to approximately 1875, the period in which Stevens transitioned between the two variations.
The barrel is clearly marked “J. STEVENS & CO. CHICOPEE / FALLS, MASS. PAT. SEPT. 6, 1864,” while serial no. 4868 is stamped on the butt. The September 6, 1864 patent marking refers to Joshua Stevens’ early breechloading firearm design and remained associated with these distinctive pocket rifles.
Importantly, examination of the action confirms that this example incorporates the frame-mounted firing pin associated with the Second Issue, rather than the hammer-mounted firing pin of the earlier configuration. Together with characteristics retained from the First Issue, this provides physical evidence for identifying no. 4868 as a transitional example produced around the changeover between the two variations.
Introduced in 1872, the New Model Pocket Rifle was a larger development of Stevens’ earlier pocket-rifle design, capable of accommodating cartridges up to .32 caliber. The First Issue was produced approximately 1872–1875 and was succeeded by the Second Issue beginning about 1875. The relocation of the firing pin from the hammer to the frame was one of the principal mechanical changes distinguishing the later issue.
The compact single-shot arm could be used as a pistol or fitted with its detachable skeleton shoulder stock to form a lightweight sporting rifle. The present example is housed in an attractive fitted walnut case by M.W. Robinson, with a red-lined interior specifically compartmented for the pocket rifle, detachable shoulder stock and accessories.

Item Condition: Fine condition overall. The nickel-plated action retains a strong, bright surface, while the barrel exhibits an attractive age-toned brown finish. Walnut grip remains fine. Housed in a handsome M.W. Robinson fitted walnut case with red-lined compartmented interior, showing expected minor age-related wear.
