A Fine U.S. Model 1812/1816 Springfield
Transitional Flintlock Musket
Stamped OHIO aft of tang...
Dated 1817 - SOLD

With an overall length of 57-inches this Model 1812-1816 transitional Springfield musket is dated "1817" on the lock plate and on the barrel tang. The lock plate is also signed "Springfield" behind the cock and has an eagle over "U.S." The barrel is mark with a "V", "P", and a faint trace of an eagle head. The bright barrel is 42-inches long. The furniture is bright finished iron which has oxidized over the years. It has a brass blade sight. The iron pan indicates that this is a transitional piece. The black walnut stock has virtually no comb and is marked "OHIO" behind the tang and on the left behind the side plate. There are also two sets of initials, one in an oval (Luther Sage?), on the stock as well as a letter "V" carved into the stock. Superb original condition with only scatted, as expected, minor dings; one small almond shaped dent about 3-inches aft of lock flat as depicted.
