US Model 1816 Musket, Type I by M.T. Wickham of Philadelphia, & Bayonet Date/Period: 1822-1837, displays EARLY mark
“M.T. WICKHAM” in arc over “PHILA”
Measurement: 42”, .69-caliber round barrel
Material: Black walnut stock
Condition: Stock is crisp and clean, nice color; any trivial dings commensurate with age
and use. Action is tight and smooth.
Additional Information: This first model, type 1, 1816 musket was made by M.T.
Wickham in Philadelphia and is an original flintlock; 42”, .69-caliber round barrel
secured by barrel bands. Early production marks, “M.T. WICKHAM” in an arc over
“PHILA”; buttplate tang is unmarked …barrel marked with sideways “F” over “P” over
“US”. Standard type I features including flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail, forward
bend at frizzen top, brass pan and low stock comb. Lower swivel attached to frontend of
trigger plate forward of bow by means of a lug; bow is integral to trigger plate. Barrel.
Bands, and sideplate in smooth bright finish with minor speckling; lockplate and cock in
dark finish with some fading to smokey gray.
Inspector’s marks: on left behind sideplate plateau, “V” surmounting “GF” for George
Flegel [sometimes Flegal] who assumed inspector’s duties in 1815; active 1815-1823.
