Dated 1857 over 90; .40-Caliber Octagonal Smooth Bore Barrel,
The pinned barrel is a beautiful smooth brown; dovetailed silver front blade sight and V-
notched rear sight; sights centered by rocker-engraving as is the dated barrel flat;
breech flanked by platinum line inlay, also rocker engraved as is the 3.75: tang which
displays single line border engraving; screws are engraved. The two-screw percussion
lock with canted edges is signed ARMSTRONG – PHILADELPHIA; simple thin-line
engraving conforming to border; tail with fancy engraving. Curly maple stock with
checkered grip and simple scratch-line incising; tang is flanked by scroll and line
incising; the stock features eleven rocker engraved silver inlays and rocker engraved
brass lock escutcheons. The brass furniture has developed great color and patina; plain
nose-cap…the pipes, butt-strap, and trigger guard all display engraving in the same
style as silver ornamentation. The pistol is in generally fine original condition, minor
imperfections commensurate with age and use mentioned for accuracy; minor wood
loss at tail end of lock mortise as depicted; hammer doesn’t hold at full cock…an easy
repair if it matters.
