Cased Smith & Wesson Model 1, 2nd Issue, Presented
.22-Caliber Short Rimfire, 7-Shot Non-Fluted Cylinder, 3 3/16” Octagonal Barrel - SOLD
This example having serial number 122953 displays standard barrel markings: SMITH &
WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. Rosewood grips with square butt are fine; barrel
retains 60/70% bright blue; cylinder about 85/90%. Frame and backstrap retain 98%
silver. The action is tight and smooth, bore is clean…crisp.
The period pencil inscription on bottom of box reads:
“S.L. Bradley / New Haven / Aug 8, 1867” [upper left corner]
“Presented by / Royal T. Smythe Esq / August 8, 1867” [lower right corner]
The inscription is important because of the variations in the M.W. Robinson cases, and
the difficulty of determining which examples were made first. Particularly this subject
example which is the type fitted with a 52 round cartridge block and an added spacer on
the left side. These have been alternately attributed to belonging to the Model 1, 1th
Issue gun, and to a Model 1, 2nd issue early production. However, no one has ever
presented hard evidence that we are aware of. It is important that this case has an
actual date written on it, placing it in the end of the Model 1, 2nd Issue production. The
case remains in excellent original condition; perhaps ¼-inch of trigger wear to burgundy
brushed cotton (velvet) lining. The case is complete with an original S&W cleaning rod,
key, and a bonus of 39 rounds of period no-headstamp cartridges.
