Brown Bess Pattern 1809 New Land Musket, India Pattern Type II (Model 1810)
Overall length: 55"; barrel length: 39.25", .75-caliber…now thin at muzzle

Brown Bess Pattern 1809 New Land Musket, India Pattern Type II (Model 1810), right facing

This musket is the same as the1793 Musket, (India Pattern, Type I) with only two
changes in the lock design; the cock is more robust and has a large opening in the
center of its throat. This newly designed reinforced cock was less likely to break than its
swan-necked predecessor. The pan was redesigned…the new reshaped version holds
more powder within its deeper cavity. India patterns served British Infantrymen well up
to and including the Napoleonic War and the War of 1812. The 1809 New land Musket
was produced until 1815. This ordinance weapon displays a “CROWNED BROAD
ARROW”, a “CROWN over GR” and the “TOWER” mark on the lockplate. A
“CROWNED 14” Ordinance inspector’s mark IS stamped into tail end of barrel tang;
King’s view and proof marks are on the barrel. The name GALTON is neatly stamped in
the underside of buttstock; T. FIELD is stamped in the sideplate plateau. The walnut
stock displays a rich dark patina, typical dings and dents commensurate with age and
use. Barrel is a dark plumb brown; light surface pitting around vent and under pan; all
brass furniture in old patina. The lock needs attention, very tight spring, sets to full cock
but will not fire; we have not removed the lock. All-in-all a nice gun, better than average.
