Saber, Bird Head Mounted, Saber with Scabbard, Gilt Brass, Blued Blade Unknown Maker, Early 19th century

The blued blade with wide fuller is marked “WARRANTEED” (Likely English for American market] is 31-inches in length; the gilt decoration includes, the American seal; a stand of arms with liberty cap on polearm; a full-length Indian with quiver and polearm and foliate vignettes…blade edge has just a few scattered tiny nicks. Interestingly, a very different bird pommel with head and spread wing turned left; the bird surmounts an American shield held by bowknot; tapering backstrap joins a detailed ferrule. The oakleaf knuckle bow joins the pommel and quillon that is downturned over blade; oakleaf langets. Grip is carved bone; small chip under bow where it enters the pommel. The scabbard is intricately engraved with American eagle under roiling clouds with strong beams of sunlight against a finely stippled ground; this vignette is centered by geometric and foliate designs as are the hanging bands. Ten-inches of the tips similarly ornamented. Overall length: 36.25”
