Tall Chests
Tall Chest on Frame with Drawer, Chippendale,
Antique Carved, Original Paint & Hardware
Likely Eastern Connecticut
Date/Period: 1775-1785
Measurement: Height: 62"; width: 38.5"; depth: 19.75"
Material: Tulip poplar primary wood, old growth white pine secondary
Condition: Missing a spur [return] that flanked drop on front base apron, all else original
and outstanding
Additional Information: The dovetail joined case [top and bottom] displays an
elaborate crown molding above three short drawers, the center drawer features a
classic Connecticut spiral carved fan contained within a conforming linked crescent
border cut with gouge chisel blade…this ornamentation is within a narrow sweep gouge
blade created border. The case contains five graduated thumb-molded drawers and is
raised on a base having a single drawer above the ambitiously shaped apron. The
center drop with incised border is carved as are the roundels featuring pinwheel carving;
side cutouts relate to robust double toe feet. The drawer bottoms are of “boxed-out”
construction and inside out dovetail joinery…both styles and wood species employed
speak to Eastern Connecticut shop traditions. The magnificent wide backboards
displaying great color are intact.
