A rare and highly appealing early buttery cupboard, distinguished by its unusual and wonderfully functional arrangement of open shelving. Three long, shallow shelves rise above a broadly recessed work or serving area, flanked by small, tiered compartments, with a deep open shelf below. Likely intended for use in a buttery or pantry, the cupboard would have provided ready access to an assortment of household and food-storage wares. Today, its remarkable shelf configuration offers an exceptional setting for the display of early kitchen objects, stoneware, treen, bandboxes, baskets, and other country furnishings.
