Material: Stoneware, brown wash, and salt-glaze

Condition: Excellent original condition, a shallow dent to lid and a very small trivial
shallow chip near bottom. Displays beautifully.

The frieze applied around the body features six pair of dancers and a pair of musicians;

This jug shows scenes of dancing peasants after prints [Peasant’ Feast] by German
artist Hans Sebald Beham. The decoration is likely a parody of proper behavior, a
reminder against excess. The inscription below the dancers translates, "Gerald, thou
must blow lustily so the peasants may dance as though they were mad. Faith, says the
pastor, I will dance away my cap with my cassock."
