An impressive mid-17th century Rhenish Bellarmine, or graybeard, jug of robust ovoid form, having a short neck with multiple cordons and applied loop handle. The frontal decoration is dominated by a wonderfully expressive applied bearded mask, boldly modeled with deeply furrowed features [almost confrontational…it gives the jug tremendous personality], above a large applied armorial medallion bearing a crowned, quartered shield and dated 1648.

The richly mottled brown salt-glazed body displays characteristic firing variations, while cobalt-blue enrichment dramatically accents the mask and armorial devices. Additional applied armorial decoration appears at the side. The combination of substantial scale, strongly modeled decoration, heraldic ornament, and a specific 1648 date gives the vessel exceptional presence.

Origin: Rhenish, Germany, probably Frechen

Item Date: Dated 1648

Material: Salt-glazed stoneware brushed with cobalt.

Item Condition: Excellent original condition…retains a strong, undisturbed surface with expected [extremely minor] firing irregularities and age-related wear; scattered trivial dings to base.
