Antique, Model 1841 Hall Breech Loading Percussion Rifle, Type II, RARE
32.5-inch, .52-caliber seven groove rifled barrel in brown lacquer
Breech Marked in Three Lines; H. Ferry / U.S. / 1841, right facing

Rifled to muzzle; wide style hammer stamped “W”, the bolster is rounded, all furniture is
iron; Huger’ s Fish Tail [looks like a fishtail] receiver opening device [rather than spur
latch] the breech is raised for loading by pushing down on the fishtail lever. The
rectangular front site is also the bayonet stud and is offset to the left; V-notch rear site is
correspondingly offset to the left. The wiping rod with button head is held in place under
the barrel by friction; rear sling swivel with spherical head is secured through the rear of
the one-piece trigger guard tang by its integral wood screw that is centered and
reinforced with two additional screws that fasten the trigger guard to the stock. There
are no inspectors’ marks on Harpers Ferry-made model 1819 or 1841 rifles. This very
good example displays a smooth and even brown color with some appropriate mottling;
the receiver and breech retain 75% dark case hardening. The walnut stock features a
rich dark dry patina; mentioned for full disclosure are three short and tight grain fissures
on right side that do not distract or compromise the stock integrity in any way; a narrow
3.75” area on left side above trigger guard was long ago treated with color-matched
wood filler. The gun displays well. The action and block release are sooth and
responsive…a nice scarcely encountered rarity.
