Additional Information: Decorated in the Style of Berlin, Connecticut Shops, Attributed
to Edward Francis. The trunk lid with wide yellow band…the large flowers and floral
spray painted on ends are among Berlin shop traditions as is the ribbon-stroke border
decoration on lid. See American Painted Tinware, Volume IV by Gina Martin, and Lois
Tucker; pp. 22/23. Volume I, chapter one discusses the Berlin, Connecticut shop
traditions in detail. The authors state that: “Green paint is very thin and nearly
impossible to see now”. This trunk, a rare survivor…is outstanding.

A must unusual and pleasing form with weighted lid [cast lead finial] featuring four-color
decoration. The interior is in clamshell white paint. Possibly a spice, sugar or small
chestnut urn or part of a garniture set. Displays well, minor seam splits near rim,
scatters small areas of paint loss; interior is grungy with light surface rust limited to
bottom. (Height: 8.25")
