Work Table, Tavern Table, Original Surface
New England, Circa 1730
A rare and commodious survivor in great surface

Antique Work/Tavern Table in Original Surface, New England, Circa 1730, angle view

The rectangular top features a generous overhang and has batten ends; retains original wood pegs that affix it to the plain apron with single long drawer. The top is raised on block, reel, baluster, and ring turned legs resting on original feet, joined by block and turned medial stretcher. (The table is nearly full height; some wear to feet; original dry red paint; period brasses are in original borings, however, they are not original. As depicted, an approximately 3 by 3-inch section of the rear-left corner has been repaired and the adjoining batten is an old working replacement with all else fine; dimensions: 26.25" high, 26.25 by 46")

Diminutive Early William & Mary Table, Rare Small Size, New England
Date/Period: 1700-1720

Diminutive Early William & Mary Table, Rare Small Size, New England, entire view

Measurement: Height: 21.5"; top: 28.25" x 16.25", posts ate 1.75” in diameter

Material: Maple and Northeastern white pine

Condition: Very good, full height; fissures to top, cleats added to underside of top

Additional Information: Rectangular top having molded edges projecting over a plain
apron raised on robustly turned legs joined by molded stretchers. Traces of early red
paint are more prevalent on underside.

Ramblings: This table is related to early tavern and/or worktable forms however this
table is unique in its diminutive scale. The well-used top, darkened with age and
use…displaying the vestiges of time suggests that it may have been used at the hearth
facilitating food preparation. Nutting displays a small table standing at 22-inches that he
suggests may have been used to serve coffee or tea. The full foot survival may speak to
a static position rather than being dragged around a sandy tavern floor for many
decades.
