Both paintings are confidently assigned to Belknap’ s oeuvre.
Zedekiah Belknap [born in Auburn, Massachusetts] was an itinerant portraitist whose specialty was life-size portraits. Likely without formal art training, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1807; he painted portraits in Vermont, New Hampshire, New York City and Massachusetts. His stylized formula is pleasing and allowed him to paint fast. Belknap paid close attention to details yet used a minimum of apparent brush strokes. He painted on wood panels and canvas. Rarely were his paintings signed.
