Charming example of early 20th-century American folk textile art. The body is filled with dense, directional wool embroidery that creates a ribbed, almost fur-like texture. The three-lobed purely decorative “pocket” flaps on the lower left are intriguing. They are appliqued and stitched with the same red wool thread as the border. purely decorative.

The stylized canine—complete with oversized eye, exaggerated curled tail, and bright red collar—is worked in dense chain-stitch wool that mimics fur texture. The piece reflects resourceful rural creativity at the turn of the century. A joyful survivor of domestic folk tradition.

Item Date: Circa 1870 - 1910. (American) Stylized animal motifs surge in American folk art 1880–1920, especially in Pennsylvania German, Appalachian, and African American quilt/appliqué traditions.

Item Condition: Good condition commensurate with age; small puncture just above mid-back is honest wear – nothing that detracts from display. Light overall fading consistent with 100+ years of display. Displays well.
