Jacob Medinger (1856-1932) was a significant German potter in Limerick Township, Montgomery County Pennsylvania, known for his sgraffito-decorated red earthenware, a traditional folk-art style of the Pennsylvania-German community, dating back to the 1700s. He is considered by many to be one of the last original Pennsylvania German potters. Some of the inspiration for his sgraffito decorated wares came from early potters, and is considered to be some of Medinger’s more desirable pottery; this plate with a coggled edge is an example of that production, covered in slip decoration with six flowers, a heart, a sgraffito border and the year “1803.” A number of examples of Medinger’s production are also displayed as part of Historic Trappe’s current exhibit, titled, From Hubener to Medinger: Redware Potters of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
