Maine… featuring three American shields and floral decoration…
The carved arched backboard with sawtooth border is above the elliptical top deck facilitating five thread spools and an applied tray. The open wallpaper covered cavity above a bowed divider and drawer accommodated thread spools. The lower case containing a single drawer is raised on a cutout base. The outstanding and original paint displays a great patina and is without compromise.
A closely related box by the same hand was in the collection of Nan Gurley; we have images.
Inscribed on the bottom of drawer: Mrs. R. L. Carver / Bought 1859 / October the 8th 1877″.
