Moses in the Bullrushes
Pierce Academy, Middleborough, Massachusetts
Created by Sally Strobridge (b. May 29, 1795, Middleborough, MA) at Pierce Academy, this needlework depicts the scene of baby Moses with a painted sky, blue Nile River, and floral border. All faces are painted, and the glass [eglomise] is inscribed with Sally’s name, school, and location in gold, accented by painted gold emblems. (Accompanied by genealogy and academy information)
Note: Peirce Academy was established as a school for boys in 1808 and admitted girls by 1810; there is no record of the first preceptress.
Sally Strobridge (1795-1875) was probably a day scholar at the Academy. She was the daughter of William Strobridge (C.1756-1843) and Hannah Crane of Middleborough (1760-1826), and she became the wife of Gershom Crane.

Measurement: Sight: 15.25" x 13.5"; Frame: 20.5" x 19"
Material: Silk, gold metallic thread, paint on silk background, original gold frame.
Item Condition: No splits to silk; a few minor [tiny] pinholes in border, toning and scattered foxing in the painted Nile River. Displays well.
