A tool with ancient roots dating back to the Egyptians.
This example, a rare survivor…a housewright’s tool [also used by masons] used to plumb framing when erecting a structure. A simple lead plumb bob would hang in the aperture, indicating a vertical position.
Examples in early paint are extremely rare (we have never seen another). Early examples are rare in that they became firewood when the spirit level was introduced and became the norm in the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
