Circa 1742-1775
A fine and rare pair of English all brass silver mounted Queen Anne flintlock pistols by; “BUMFORD”, ‘LONDON’. Round three stage turn-off brass barrels featuring cannon muzzles each displaying registry marks. Brass frames marked; “BUMFORD” underneath the frizzen with two Tower private proofs and the maker’s mark; “I (J) B” (John Bumford) and engraved on the top of breech; “LONDON”.
The silver butt caps appear to have been added in 1796 by Crispin Fuller. He was apprenticed at 14 years old to Hester Bateman and married her granddaughter, Sarah, in 1781. Fuller was a London maker who entered his first mark on 29 December 1792. Address: 42 Monkwell Street. Second and third marks (two sizes), 11th July 1796.
