Molded Copper Weathervane, Ranger, Setter Weathervane, “McDona’s Ranger”

The mold for this flattened full-body dog with cut serrated fringes [feathers] is attributed to carver Henry Leach (1809-1885), Boston, Massachusetts [circa 1871]. See – American Weathervanes / The Art of the Winds by Robert Shaw, pp. 154 and 155.

Item Date: Circa 1875

Measurement: Length: 36"; height: 20.5"; depth: 4.25"

Material: Copper, paint

Item Condition: The underside of the muzzle shows an open seam. It appears that the weathervane took a tumble off the roof, likely during a hurricane – necessitating the long-ago replacement of the horizontal bar. A copper reducing Tee and copper tubing facilitated a neat repair as depicted.

Literature: L. W. Cushing & Sons Catalog No. 9, page 17: No. 320 English Setter Dog / McDona’s Ranger (Copyrighted Sept. 11, 1882). See, The Art Of The Weathervane by Steve Miller, page 140, Ranger, L. W. Cushing; owned by Martin and Estelle Shack.
