Northern England, probably Yorkshire, The vocabulary of carving is outstanding

An exceptional joined oak court cupboard exhibiting a particularly rich and sophisticated vocabulary of carving. The molded cornice is above a deeply carved continuous frieze of interlaced foliate ornament; the recessed upper cupboard is embellished with geometric lozenges, rosettes and a prominent central flowerhead, flanked by boldly turned pendant elements.
The lower case, enclosed by a pair of heavily molded paneled doors, displays an unusually elaborate combination of carved lunettes, geometric devices, floral ornament and paired classical male portrait medallions, probably representing warriors or heroes of antiquity. The unusual classical portrait medallions may derive from contemporary prints, medals or other graphic sources available to the carver.
The remarkable variety and confident execution of the carving suggest the work of an accomplished regional joiner familiar with both traditional northern English ornament and fashionable classical imagery. The joined construction, decorative vocabulary and surviving dark historic surface suggest manufacture during the third quarter of the seventeenth century, probably in Yorkshire or the surrounding northern counties.

Item Date: Circa 1650 - 1680
Material: Oak
Item Condition: Age and use has necessitated some restoration of hardware and secondary wood elements; all doorknobs, locks, and hinges are appropriately replaced; a thin fillet [or spline] of wood has been added to each door opening [vertically on lock side of case] to compensate shrinkage. The left proper shelf within lower case is not original; there are multiple replacements of floor and backboards of which period wood was used a very long time ago. A small section of rear uppercase stile is restored. Essentially, all carved elements, rails, stiles, and paneling are original and without compromise. This highly detailed cupboard features good color and displays beautifully.
