A mid-19th century lantern commonly used by police and fire companies. The lamp is constructed of tinned sheet iron with a fluted ventilator, clear magnifying bull’s-eye lens, and a knob below the lens which can be pulled from left to right, rotating an interior cylinder, thus blocking the light. Retains its original dead-flame “rope-type” whale oil burner with two vertical wick tubes.
