Fine cased pair of French percussion boxlock pistols, individually numbered 1 and 2, approximately .48 caliber, each with a 2 ½ in. Damascus barrel and measuring 6 in. overall. The pistols feature finely engraved boxlock actions, deeply fluted ebony grips and compact, elegantly proportioned forms.
The underside of each barrel is prominently gold-inlaid “MARENBERT / ★ A PARIS ★,” with the pistols individually numbered 1 and 2. The identity of Marenbert has not presently been established in the standard references for European gunmakers; the inscription is therefore recorded as it appears rather than assigning an undocumented maker attribution.
The French-fitted case retains a partially legible embossed retailer’s stamp inside the lid identifying Ferrier, 66 Rue St. Honoré, Paris. The first line appears consistent with Ferrier followed by an abbreviated form of arquebusier, although the impression is insufficiently clear to transcribe the complete inscription with certainty.
The case contains an appealing complement of accessories including bullet mold, combination wrench/tool, gorgeous turned flask, cap box and lead balls, together with covered accessory compartments.
The consecutive numbers 1 and 2, identical configuration and matching decoration establish the pistols as a purpose-made pair. Their finely engraved actions, Damascus barrels, deeply fluted ebony grips, gold-inlaid Paris signatures and fitted presentation case represent the refined character of French civilian arms produced during the percussion era.
