A Magnificent Regence Carved Giltwood Mirror of Baroque Design

A choice example of rectangular form, surmounted by a pelmet with foliate scrolls issuing fabric and rope twist swags. The design for this giltwood pier glass is probably derived from an engraving by Daniel Marot (1661-1752) published as the title page to his Nouveaux Livre d’Orfèvrerie circa 1701-1703. Marot was, in turn, undoubtedly influenced by the French mannerist designer and engraver, Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682), as can be seen in a plate from the latter’s Grotesques et Moresques series, after 1634 but before 1667; a copy of which is in the Rijksmuseum (Orn Cat II 902). Both images feature the baldequin [canopy] draped with swags, a motif that Le Pautre was to use in another series of designs, the Alcoves a la Romaine series (Orn Cat II 8893).
