Knife Pistol
NON-XLL...without peer
Unwin & Rodgers, Sheffield

The brain-child of cutler Philip Unwin and his partner James Rodgers, the single barrel pistol with a folding knife under the barrel was manufactured in Sheffield, England from about 1830 through the 1880's. Their earlier knife pistols are percussion, but Unwin, his son and grandson were granted a new patent in 1861 to produce cartridge knife pistols. This example has a single folding blade under the barrel...a .25 caliber rimfire with a 3.75 inch tapered slab sided German silver barrel and a 3.75 inch folding dirk blade. The gun sports desirable rounded and checkered horn grips and a cartridge box in the butt. Unwin & Rodgers was known for interesting markings on their guns. This marking "NON-XLL" when read aloud, becomes "non-excelled" meaning "without peer". The gun is mechanically excellent with excellent markings.
