Extremely Rare Percussion Remington "Rifle Cane" - SOLD![]() It is estimated that only about 500 of the percussion version of Remington's cane gun was manufactured from 1858-1866. J.F. Thomas, master mechanic for Remington, patented the Remington "Rifle Cane." This example, serial number 191 is 34.75 inches overall; marked on the cane tip "J.F. Thomas Patent Feb'y 9, 1858 Remington & Sons Ilion, NY". As is found on most Remington cane guns, there is a silver band below the handle. The metal barrel is about 8 inches long and is housed in a sheath of gutta percha; mechanism and handle are also of gutta percha. The gun cocks by pulling the barrel forward; there is a concealed button trigger on the underside of the mechanism. It should be noted that Remington offered four or five different handle designs, in addition to custom handles. This plain curved handle is quite rare on a percussion version. The cane is in magnificent condition with the exception of two “as expected” minor imperfections...one is a tiny almost invisible crack where the handle meets the shaft, the other is a horizontal crack just behind the tip.
