Large Paint Decorated American Painted Tin Trunk

Tole Folk Art, Berlin, CT. Francis Type Decoration Featuring Birds

Decorated in the Style of Berlin, Connecticut Shops, Attributed to Edward Francis. The trunk lid with wide yellow band...the large flowers and floral spray painted on ends are among Berlin shop traditions as is the ribbon-stroke border decoration on lid. See American Painted Tinware, Volume IV by Gina Martin, and Lois Tucker; pp. 22/23. Volume I, chapter one discusses the Berlin, Connecticut shop traditions in detail. The authors state that: "Green paint is very thin and nearly impossible to see now". This trunk, a rare survivor...is outstanding.
