"V / P / eagle head" on barrel, "eagle head" on bolster; standard lockplate markings: COLT'S PT F A MFG CO / HARTFORD / CT The buttplate marked: US. Crisp inspectors' marks: "AWM" on left side of stock for Allen Wait Mather. John Taylor's final acceptance cartouche is found in the same area. See pp. 128/129 [Mather] and pp. 201/202 [John Taylor] of U.S. Military Arms Inspector Marks by Anthony Daum and Charles Pate. Mowbray Publishers, Rhode Island, 2016. It appears that the illegible mark on top of stock ahead of buttplate is Mather's. Standard two-leaf rear site; bayonet lug/blade front site.
