Eighteenth Century Paint Decorated Desk on Frame, Original Blue Paint. New England 1780-1800, Image 1

Schoolmaster or merchants' desk of frame. The slant lid with applied molding and side battens is attached to the short shelf with galley with original butterfly hinges. The lid opens to reveal an interior with three cubbies and storage compartment. The writing case sits within a molded frame featuring a shaped front rail. The square legs with inside chamfer are pure Chippendale and are joined by a box stretcher. The [vinegar & Sponged technique] blue painted surface has oxidized to a lovely bluish-green; inside of legs were never varnished and remain a light blue.
