Both paintings are immediately assigned to Belknap's oeuvre including the prepping of panel and canvas. There is a very old "granny" note on the verso identifying the gentleman as Isaac Riddle.

Material: The gentleman is oil on canvas; lady is oil on panel.
Condition: Woman: restoration [glaze] limited to chest between upper neck and lace; a .75-inch fillet added to top of panel to accommodate the period frame. The gentleman remains in original condition; displays cracklature... frame is not original and likely dates to the early 20th century.
