Silas Allen Sr. (1750-1834) Flintlock Musket, Signed, Full Stock, Original Surface Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, Circa 1795-1810

An early Worcester County original flintlock musket, the 42.5″ octagonal barrel, now shot smooth is .58-caliber and displays a smooth dark plumb-brown surface. The barrel flat is signed in script SILAS ALLEN – SHREWSBURY. Barrel is fastened with three keys. The curly maple stock displays a great patina and has an early working period wrist repair, perhaps by the maker. The 4.5-inch brass plate conforms perfectly to the wrist; it is between the breech tang and forward end of stock comb; ten plumb-brown countersunk screws with off-center slots secure the plate. The screws have great color and are so worn that the slots are about worn away. An engraved coin silver oval thumb plate in the Allen style is affixed to the make-do repair.

Item Date: Circa 1795-1810

Measurement: Overall length: 57".

Item Condition: There is a wood loss measuring 2 3/8 by 3/8" adjacent to trigger plate that conforms to make-do plate on lockplate side. Also, bit of typical curly maple loss following undulating grain opposite trigger that runs from trigger plate to plateau. Also, a small early 19th century nail and three tiny early finish nails secure a small piece of wood adjacent to previously described loss. The original Ketland lock remains tight and smooth. All brass furniture including trigger guard with typical Worcester County finial, two-piece "Allen type" engraved patchbox, buttplate; pair of lock (sideplate) escutcheons, nose cap and ramrod pipes/thimbles. All brass displays a wonderful patina.
