Painted about a year after his accession to the Swedish throne, Wadell shows Gustav in his army General's uniform. Probably painted after an existing photograph, medals have been added and removed. Though images of the new king were available to the mass market following the advent of early photography, painted portraits were desirable because of their vibrant colors.
