Displaying red, white and blue paint; silver painted cutting edge[bit blade]. The threaded burner spout and shield are angled so that when the ax rests on the carrier's shoulder the decoration and flame are vertically aligned.

Date: Lincoln campaign of 1860 and 1864

Measurement: Axe Head: 12" by 13", Handle: 42"

Condition: There are scatted dings and small paint losses; missing burner/cap.

Literature: Rail-splitter ax torches are mentioned in "Political Campaign Torches" by Herbert R. Collins (Smithsonian Institution, 1964) page 31. The author mentions two examples, one within the collections of two Washington D.C. museums... the Lincoln Museum, and the U.S. National Museum.
