Susan Catherine Waters was born in Binghamton, New York, in 1823.

She attended a female seminary in Friendville, Pennsylvania, where she developed her artistic training; married William Waters at seventeen, and with his encouragement, further developed her artistic talent. The artist traveled and painted portraits in southern New York state and Pennsylvania. When her husband's health failed, she ceased painting portraits allowing her to assist her husband taking daguerreotype and ambrotype photographs. They eventually settled in Bordentown, New Jersey, where she began painting again, she developed her more academic style in her depictions of animals, still life compositions, and portraits.

Condition: Very good with trivial fill to craquelure, the painting is lined and mounted on a new stretcher.
